Mockup of web map in use

Maps are a great way to bring engagements to life, displaying spatial information and adding a sense of place to projects. Now we're increasing The HiVE's spatial capabilities with a major upgrade to the Web Map tool, making it one of the most powerful mapping tools on the market.

The new Web Map features fast-loading, vector-based maps with the ability to personalise your map through 10 new base maps, the ability to upload and draw complex map layers with pop-up information panels and support for 3D maps.

This upgrade brings the Web Map into line with recent improvements to the Social Map tool.

Users with existing Web Maps will be automatically migrated to the new version once the update has been applied.

Layers and masks

The new Web Map supports multiple layers, which can be imported as .geojson or .shp (shapefiles) file types, geo-referenced images or drawn in the application to create markers, polygons and/or line features.

A masking layer can also be created from an imported data layer to define project boundaries or ‘mask out’ areas of the map to focus users to key information.

Data popups

A key feature of the new Web Map is the ability to create information popups, allowing data associated with any imported layer to be viewable when a user clicks a feature within the layer. This allows you to communicate detailed information in a clean and interactive way.

Additionally, information popups can be created within the application as per the Social Map. This is a perfect tool for creating dynamic and interactive maps that illustrate your data in highly visual ways.

Multiple base maps

The Web Map now allows you to choose from 10 different base maps, providing the perfect backdrop to present your data. The base maps include:

  • General Purpose
  • Standard Street
  • Community Sourced
  • Standard Satellite
  • Detailed Satellite
  • Standard Hybrid
  • Detailed Hybrid
  • Light
  • Dark
  • High Contrast

Multiple base maps can be selected for each map, and visitors can toggle between maps to select the base map they want to view. You can also use your own base maps using a custom Web Mapping Service (WMS), including 3D maps, or even turning them off completely if using an image overlay that is not geo-referenced is preferable.

Fresh User Interface

The Web Map’s User Interface (UI) has been redesigned with a fresh and contemporary new look that makes it easier for you to create beautiful maps from scratch. The full-screen UI includes a map preview, so you can view the results of your changes in real time and adjust your maps accordingly.

Deprecated features

There are a number of features that will be retired from the Web Map tool:

  • The Web Map will no longer have an adjustable width. All maps will be automatically set to expand to 100% the width of the content area they are added to.
  • The .kml file type will no longer be supported. Existing Web Maps using .kml files will be unchanged, but any existing .kml layers cannot be edited or removed via the UI.
  • The ability to import data from Carto has also been retired from the Social Map. This feature has not been utilised by our customers and has presented technical issues when developing the new Web Map.
  • The overview map feature has been removed.
